Online Safety Tip: Smishing
Smishing is a text-message scam — the name combines “SMS” and “phishing.” Scammers send texts that look like they come from trusted companies, schools, your bank, healthcare system, or even family members, hoping you will tap a link, reply with personal information, or send money right away. These messages often create urgency: “Your package is on hold,” “Your account was locked,” or “Confirm your child's school information now.”
A few simple habits protect your family. Never tap links in unsolicited texts, never share passwords or account numbers by text, and verify requests by calling the organization directly using a number you already trust or a number from a verified website. Teach kids that real organizations will not pressure them to act instantly or ask for personal details through a text message.
If a message seems suspicious, do not reply — block the number and report it to your carrier. Taking a few extra seconds to check before you tap can keep your family's information safe.
