Online Safety Tip: Verification Code Scams
A verification code scam is when a scammer tricks you into reading them a code that an app or website just sent you by text, email, or phone call, or a code that shows on an authenticator app. The caller or texter pretends to be your bank, a delivery company, or a social network and says they need to “verify your identity.” If you share the code, they use it to get into your account. No real company will ever ask you randomly to read a verification code out loud or send it to them. Codes are for you to type into the app or website yourself — not to hand to a stranger.
If you get a code you didn't ask for, it means someone is trying to log in to your account right now. Don't share the code — change your password. These simple steps can help families protect their accounts and feel more confident navigating the digital world.
